With three days to go for the fourth phase of Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a six-kilometre-long roadshow in his constituency of Varanasi.
The roadshow began after 5 pm with the prime minister garlanding the statue of Madan Mohan Malviya outside the Banaras Hindu University. Ditching his bullet-proof vehicle, the prime minister hopped into an open-top jeep to begin the procession through the streets of Varanasi.
He will file his nomination tomorrow. Key ministers including Piyush Goyal and Nitin Gadkari are also taking part in the roadshow.
After fanning rumours for the last few days, the Congress party has decided not to field Priyanka Gandhi from Varanasi. She is campaigning in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh. Ajay Rai has again been chosen as the Congress candidate.
In the 2014 elections, Modi got nearly 6 lakh votes. Aam Aadmi Party's Arvind Kejriwal, who fought against the prime minister, got three lakh votes and Rai managed to get only about 75,000 votes.
