Remembering the Indian political leaders who passed away this year.
Pranab Mukherjee | Former President of India, Pranab Mukherjee, who served from 2012-2017 passed on August 31, 2020 at the age of 84. A Congress stalwart, Mukherjee had tested positive for COVID-19 prior to a surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain. He was on ventilator support at the Army's Research and Referral (R&R) hospital in Delhi. Fondly called as Pranab da by people known to him, he was a towering figure in Indian politics and respected by one and all.
Ram Vilas Paswan | A prominent face in Bihar politics, Ram Vilas Paswan was part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. He passed away on October 8 at the age of 74. Paswan had undergone heart surgery. Paswan, the founder of Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) passed just ahead of the crucial assembly elections in his home state Bihar.
Ahmed Patel | A Congress veteran, Ahmed Patel was referred as party’s top troubleshooter. He died on November 25 after suffering from Covid-19. Patel was a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat and treasurer of the Indian National Congress. He had tested positive for the novel Coronavirus on October 1. Patel was Sonia Gandhi’s one of the closest political adviser. (Image: IANS)
Tarun Gogoi | Former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi, a Congress veteran, died of multiple organ failure on November 23. Gogoi had tested positive for the coronavirus on August 25. He had recovered from COVID-19 and was discharged from the hospital after two months. Gogoi had served as the Chief Minister of Assam from 2001 to 2016 and had also served six terms as Lok Sabha MP. He was also union minister of state in the ministry of food and ministry of food processing industries.
Amar Singh | Former Samajwadi Party leader and Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh died on August 1 2020, in Singapore after a prolonged illness. Singh was 64. A veteran in Indian politics, Singh also had close links with famous Bollywood personalities. After being expelled from the Samajwadi Party, he floated his own Rashtriya Lok Manch in 2011. Later in 2014, he joined the Rashtriya Lok Dal party.
Lalji Tandon | Madhya Pradesh governor Lalji Tandon passed away on July 21 following a long illness at the age of 85. He was considered close to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Tandon also served as the Governor of Bihar.
Motilal Vora | Veteran Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Motilal Vora passed away on December 21, just a day after celebrating his 93rd birthday. Vora had tested COVID-19 positive in October but recovered and was discharged from hospital on October 16. With a political career spanning five decades, Vora was considered close to Gandhi family and was the treasurer of the All India Congress Committee (AICC) for 18 years. (Image: Twitter)
Jaswant Singh | A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stalwart and former union minister Jaswant Singh passed away on September 27 at the age of 82 years. He suffered a cardiac arrest. Singh held defence, external affairs and finance portfolios in Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government.
