The story of Mattu Pongal

Updated : January 15, 2019 11:33 PM IST

Maattu Pongal or cattle festival is the third day of the four-day Pongal festival. Though the name of the festival is specific to Tamil Nadu, it is also celebrated in other south Indian states such as Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. According to legends, one day Lord Shiva asked his bull Basava to visit Earth and tell mankind to eat once in a month and take oil massage and bath every day. Instead, the bull said the mortals to take bath with oil once a month and eat daily. This made Lord Shiva angry and he asked Basava to stay on Earth and plough fields to help people grow more food so that they can eat food every day. Thus, on the day of Maatu Pongal, farmers honour and celebrate their cattle.
