Q: 34-year-old Abhishek Khandelwal writes to us from Jaipur. I want to know which scheme i.e. direct or regular of mutual fund (monthly SIP) give higher return in 15 years of investing period.
A: Direct plans have a lower expense ratio, while regular plans have a higher expense ratio. The return differential is not more than 1-1.5 percent. However, it's always better to opt for a regular plan as you get the expertise of fund managers before investing. Most investors in order to gain from the 1 percent return differential miss noticing that the impact cost of not being in the good funds could be much more than the return differential as is visible in the average difference in returns between the top 50 percent and bottom 50 percent of the universe.
