The Indian market picked up in trade on Friday amid volatility, negative sentiment in the global markets and ahead of the kickstart in March-quarter earnings and the government releasing key inflation numbers. The BSE Sensex closed 160 points higher or 0.41 percent at 38,787, and the Nifty 50 gained 46.75 points or 0.40 points to 11,643.
GAIL, ITC, Maruti Suzuki, Cipla, and Zee Entertainment were the top Nifty gainers while Indiabulls Housing Finance, IOC, Bajaj Finance, Larsen and Toubro, Bharti Airtel were the top Nifty losers.

Indian shares traded marginally higher in the afternoon trade on Friday amid volatile trades, tracking negative sentiment in the global markets ahead of March-quarter earnings. At 1.55 PM, the BSE Sensex was up 88.29 points or 0.23 percent at 38,695.30, and the Nifty 50 gained 24.80 points or 0.21 points to 11,621.50.
The Nifty MidCap and SmallCap indices were up 0.2 percent and 0.44 percent, respectively. Most sectoral indices traded higher led by FMCG, which rose over 1 percent followed by auto, media and pharma. Metal, telecom and capital goods were in negative territory.
ITC, Maruti Suzuki, HeroMotoCorp, GAIL and Cipla led gains on the key indices, whereas Indian Oil, Bharti Airtel, Indiabulls Housing Finance, L&T and Hindalco were major losers.

Jet Airways shares fell 1.5 percent to Rs 257 per share after the airline on Thursday said it has suspended international operations until further notice, sources told CNBC-TV18.
The government rules stipulate an airline must have at least 20 planes for operating international operations. Of the 14 aircraft that it is operating as of Thursday, eight are wide-body B777s (seven) and an A330-- generally used for long-haul international operations. The remaining six planes are three B737s, which are largely used for flying on domestic routes besides on short-haul international routes and the rest three are regional ATRs.
