Indian equity benchmark indices witnessed last hour sell-off after two new fresh cases of coronavirus arrived in India on Monday. 

The 30-share BSE barometer Sensex settled 153 points, or 0.40 percent lower at 38,144. The broader NSE Nifty fell 69 points or 0.62 percent to end at 11,133.

Among broader indices, the Nifty Smallcap100 index ended over 1 percent lower. The Nifty Bank index fell 923 points and Midcap Index slipped 503 points from highs.

Except IT, all sectoral indices closed in the red. The Nifty Media and PSU Bank indexes remained the worst performers, closed nearly 5 percent lower. The Volatility Index (VIX) surged 8 percent. 

Eicher Motors, HCL Technologies, Nestle India, ICICI Bank and Tech Mahindra were the top Nifty50 gainers while YES Bank, SBI, Tata Steel, GAIL and Hero MotoCorp ended lower.
