The Indian equity market opened flat on Thursday with modest gains seen mostly in auto shares along with select largecap bank, IT and consumer stocks. Tepid global cues also negatively impacted risk appetite among investors.

The Sensex traded at 35,237, up by 95 points at 9.20 am, while the Nifty traded marginally above 10,600, at 10,604, up by 28 points.
The MidCap index moved higher by 0.16 percent, while the Nifty Bank surged 0.20 percent in initial trade.
As many as 34 sectors advanced, led by BSE Healthcare, BSE Auto, Nifty Auto, BSE Consumer Durables, rising by up to 0.6 percent. BSE Basic Metal declined the most among 9 weak sectors, falling by up to half a percent.
Among top index gainers, Hero MotoCorp, HCL Technologies, Titan Company, Eicher Motors, Tech Mahindra, L&T, Infosys, Wipro and Tata Motors, rose by up to 2 percent.
Grasim shares dipped 7 percent, while Yes Bank fell 5 percent. BPCL, Ultra Tech Cement, Gail, M&M, Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank and ONGC, dipped by up to 1.6 percent.
Yes Bank shares declined as Ashok Chawla resigned as non-executive chairman.
In currency space, the Indian rupee opened at 72.06 against the US dollar on Thursday. On Wednesday, the home currency closed at 72.30 against the greenback.
Asian markets were mixed with Japan's Nikkei declining by nearly 133 points, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.40 percent.
