India is facing its worst water crisis in history, a recent study published by NITI Aayog observed. Nearly 600 million Indians faced high to extreme water stress, with about 2,00,000 people dying each year as a result of inadequate access to safe water, according to a report released by the government think tank.
Groundwater availability, which accounts for about 40 percent of India's water supply, is getting depleted at an 'unsustainable' rate and about 70 percent of India's water supply is contaminated resulting in illness, or worse, death.
If the current situation persists, India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will deplete to 6 percent by 2050, the report added.
