In the year 2018 (January to August), the domestic carriers carried 91.4 million passengers, registering a 21 percent growth from the corresponding period of previous year, according to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
According to the DGCA data, SpiceJet recorded the highest passenger load factor (PLF) of 93.6 percent, followed by Go Air at 84.6 percent. The PLF for Air India stood at 82.3 percent.
The 12 domestic airlines operational during the month reported a higher overall cancellation rate of 2.27 percent for the month, as compared to 1.49 percent in the previous month and 0.83 percent in August, last year.
Up to 51 percent of the cancellations were attributed to bad weather conditions. IndiGo reported a sharp increase in cancellation rates during the month to 2.52 percent as compared to 0.09 percent in the previous month.
All domestic carriers put together, received 668 complaints in August, which translates into 0.59 complaints per 10,000 passengers carried during the month. Flight problem and baggage related issues were the major reasons behind these passenger complaints.
With regard to on-time performance, SpiceJet topped the chart with on-time performance of 87.4 percent for four metro airports – New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Hyderabad. SpiceJet was followed by Indigo at 87.2 percent.
Indigo recorded the highest market share during the month by carrying 42 percent of all passengers carried. Indigo is followed by Jet Airways (including JetLite) (15.2 percent), Air India (12.7 percent) and SpiceJet (12.4 percent).
