Vedanta's Tuticorin plant closure politically motivated, claims counsel before NGT

The counsel for Vedanta, Aryama Sundaram, argued that the plant was responsible for meeting 80 percent of India’s copper demands.
In May, after widespread protests against the copper smelter, police firing had claimed 13 civilian lives.
The NGT has now directed the Tamil Nadu government to file its reply not just on the legal point of maintainability, but also on the merits of Vedanta’s petition.
