Investor sentiment is likely to remain cautiously positive on Thursday, a day after the Sensex scaled a fresh high, but erased gains to close marginally higher. The BSE index finally settled at record high, up 33 points at 36858, while the Nifty was marginally down by 2 points at 11,132.
Here is what you need to know today before the market opens: SGX Nifty: The Singapore traded Nifty Futures scaled 11,171.5 in trade, pointing at a possible record opening for the Nifty today. The SGX currently trades at levels tad below 11,170 vs Nifty July Fut's Wednesday close of 11,136, indicating a gap-up opening for the Indian market. Asian markets: Asian stocks edged higher on Thursday, taking comfort from gains on Wall Street after US president Donald Trump and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker agreed to work toward eliminating trade barriers on industrial goods. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.2 percent. Australian shares fell 0.4 percent and Japan's Nikkei stock index was 0.2 percent lower. US markets: The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 172.16 points to 25,414.1, the S&P 500 gained 25.67 points to 2,846.07 and the Nasdaq Composite added 91.47 points to 7,932.24. Oil: US crude ticked up 0.4 percent at $69.54 a barrel. Brent crude was 0.9 percent higher at $74.61 per barrel. Dollar: The dollar dropped 0.2 percent against the yen to 110.79. The euro was up less than 0.1 percent on the day at $1.1735, while the dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of six major rivals, fell 0.2 percent to 94.139. Market at close: The benchmark Sensex slipped 89 points from the intra-day record high of 36,947 to close with a minor gain of 33 points at 36,858 and the Nifty ended the session 2 points in the red after a range-bound trade of gaining 87 points to 36,909 and Nifty 10 points to 11,144. Rupee: The Indian rupee on Wednesday strengthened against US dollar after local equity markets gained for fourth session. The rupee closed at 68.78 a dollar, up 0.23 percent from its previous close of 68.95. The currency opened at 68.97 a dollar and touched a high and a low of 68.70 and 68.98 respectively. FII & DII data: Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth Rs 1,195.75 crore while domestic institutional investors bought shares worth Rs 97.64 crore in the Indian equity market on Wednesday, as per provisional data available on the NSE. June quarter earnings: Bharti Airtel, Biocon, Dr Reddy's Labs, ITC, Maruti Suzuki, Yes Bank, Tata Power. Liability recovery: The government has moved Delhi High Court to enforce a $3.8 billion recovery from Reliance Industries, Shell and ONGC following an English court ruling over its share from the Panna-Mukta and Tapti fields in western offshore, oil minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Wednesday. The liability is to be split between the three companies in proportion to their stake in the fields. State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has 40 percent interest while RIL and Shell hold 30 percent each.
