The former Prime Minister, former Karnataka Chief Minister and sitting MP from Hassan, Deve Gowda has left his home turf to head to Tumkur this time. He has left Hassan for one of his grandsons and chosen Tumkur, considered a Congress stronghold. The Janata Dal (Secular) chief, in alliance with Congress in the state, is taking on BJP's GS Basavaraj. The word is that sitting Congress MP from the seat wanted to contest from Tumkur, which could cuase friction in the alliance against BJP, but Deve Gowda would be baking on his political might and legacy to pull him through. Tumkur's major issue for polls is water crisis that the JD(S) has promised to address if voted to power. Deve Gowda is exploiting his core vote bank - the Vokkaliga community, while the BJP candidate has said he is banking on Lingayats, Yadavs, Valmikis and Brahmins in the region. Deve Gowda would also be hoping that Congress' core cotes from the seat are transferred to him.
