Justice NV Ramana appointed as the next Chief Justice of India

Ramana, whose name was recommended by outgoing CJI SA Bobde will take charge after the retirement of Bobde on April 23 and will have a term till August 26, 2022.

He was elevated to the Supreme Court in February 2014.

He has also served as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court.

President Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Justice NV Ramana as the 48th Chief Justice of India. Ramana, whose name was recommended by outgoing CJI SA Bobde, will take charge after the retirement of Bobde on April 23 and will have a term till August 26, 2022.

Born in an agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district on August 27, 1957, Ramana enrolled as an advocate in February 1983 at the Andhra Pradesh High Court. After years of service, including as counsel for various government organisations, he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in 2000.

He was elevated to the Supreme Court in February 2014, prior to which he was the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. He has been part of the bench that held the office of the Chief Justice of India under the ambit of the Right to Information Act.
