The Supreme Court agreed to hear on Wednesday the plea by the parents of the deceased girl seeking an urgent hearing of the petition to include a medical expert of their choice in a team which will conduct a re-postmortem. Also, the apex court refused to grant an interim stay on the re-postmortem ordered by the Madras High Court.
The High Court on Monday condemned the violence in the Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu following the death of a girl student. The court said it looked like the violence was organised. The court has asked the Director General of Police (DGP) to form a special investigation team to probe the incident and said appropriate criminal action should be taken against the rioters.
Justice N Sathish Kumar said the police should control such incidents with an iron hand and take stringent action against the rioters. A status report must be filed on July 29, the court said.
The court has ordered a second autopsy of the student. The judge said the post-mortem should be conducted by a team of three doctors to be appointed by him and it must be videographed. If he wants, the girl's father can also be allowed along with his counsel, the judge added.
    What happened?
A class 12 student of a private residential school in Chinnasalem's Kaniyamoor area was found dead on July 13 on the hostel premises. Kallakurichi is about 260 kms from Chennai and is near Villupuram in northern Tamil Nadu.
The victim allegedly jumped to death from the top floor of the hostel building. Reportedly, a postmortem report indicated that she had sustained injuries before her death. While the police registered a case and initiated a probe into the matter, her parents, relatives, and people belonging to her village Periyanasalur in the Cuddalore district, have been staging non-stop protests raising suspicions in connection with the teenager's death and seeking justice.
The protests were being held in both Kallakurichi and Cuddalore districts.
