    Rajiv Kumar, former Finance Secretary, has been appointed as the Election Commissioner of India. The Law Ministry said in a notification that Kumar, an IAS officer of the 1984 batch from Jharkhand cadre, would take charge from Ashok Lavasa -- who recently resigned -- with effect from August 31.
    The statement read: "In pursuance of clause (2) of Article 324 of the Constitution, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Rajiv Kumar, IAS(Retd.) as the Election Commissioner with effect from the date he assumes the office vice Shri Ashok Lavasa, Election Commissioner who has resigned with effect from 31st August, 2020."
    President Ram Nath Kovind cleared the appointment with effect from the date he assumes office.
