Ground report: Festive shoppers slowly return to Delhi's Sarojini, Lajpat Nagar markets

As festival season embarks, the busy markets of Delhi NCR are seeing some return of consumers. CNBC-TV18's Timsy Jaipuria, who visited New Delhi's Sarojini Nagar and Lajpat Nagar markets, says that while increased footfalls do not necessarily mean more spending.

As the festive season nears, markets in Delhi-NCR have started seeing a beeline of consumers, but this doesn’t mean that spending has risen. Around two weeks back, markets saw limited customer movement, but as the festival season nears, there is a 60 to 70 percent rise in the number of footfalls, compared to pre-COVID levels.
The return of consumers has revived some cheer for shop owners ahead of the festive season, but business – in terms of volumes -- is far from near normal levels.
Steady growth is what traders and shopkeepers are expecting, but the recent advisory by the Health Ministry on an expected spike in the number of footfalls to market places might push some shoppers away from venturing out.
