6.1 magnitude earthquake strikes Sikkim

An earthquake of 6.1 magnitude hit Sikkim on Monday night, the National Centre for Seismology said. The quake occurred at 8.49 pm at a depth of 10 km near the India-Bhutan border.

People got frightened and rushed out of their houses but no loss of life or property has been reported so far, an official said.

It was earlier reported that the earthquake was of 5.4 magnitude, however was later revised to 6.1 magnitude.

Multiple reports suggested that tremors was felt in Bhutan, Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim with a probable epicenter in Nepal.

One report claimed that the tremors were felt in many areas including Patna, Araria, and Kishanganj at 8.49 pm. The quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale occurred near the Sikkim-Nepal border.

Governor West Bengal Jagdeep Dhankhar said in a tweet that he called TMC chief Mamata Banerjee to enquire about her wellbeing after tremors of the earthquake were felt in North Bengal as she was at Siliguri.

Had telephone conversation @MamataOfficial to enquire her well being as 6.1 Earthquake Tremors Felt In North Bengal. Hon’ble CM is at Siliguri presently. Relieved to learn all well at her end.

The epicentre of the earthquake was 25 km east-southeast (ESE) of Gangtok, Sikkim.

PM Narendra Modi is taking stock of the damage due to the earthquake. He is speaking to the Chief Ministers of all four affected states including Bihar, Assam, and Sikkim, reports said.
