The Chief Justice of India’s office is accustomed to receiving many letters and appeals in the mailbox. The letters vary from communications with the Central government on judicial appointments to a bevy of appeals for justice from lawyers and members of civil society. But a handwritten note from a 10-year old in Kerala was quite the exception.
Written on a hand-drawn scroll, Lidwina Joseph praised the top court for “saving lives” in the fight against COVID-19, and in the process also melted many hearts. She wrote in the letter that she had been following the news and was, “much worried about the deaths in Delhi and other parts of country due to Corona.”
Praising the top court’s timely intervention the 5th grader wrote, “I understood that your honourable court has intervened effectively at the sufferings and death of ordinary people in the fight against COVID-19. I am happy and feel proud your honourable court has moved orders for the supply of oxygen and saved many lives. I understood your honourable court has initiated effective steps in bringing down COVID-19 and death rate in our country especially in Delhi.”
In conclusion she wrote, “I thank you, your Honour, for this. Now I feel very proud and happy.”
Chief Justice of India Justice NV Ramana, moved by the letter, wrote back to her. The letter reads, “I have received your beautiful letter along with a heart-warming illustration of the Judge at work.”
He added, “I am really impressed with the way you kept track of happenings in the country and the concern that you have displayed for the wellbeing of people in the wake of pandemic.” Wishing Lidwina the best, he also wrote, “I am sure you will grow up into an alert, informed and responsible citizen who will contribute immensely towards the nation building. With best wishes and blessings for your all-round success”
Along with his letter, he has also shipped a copy of the Indian Constitution, with the handwritten note saying, “with best wishes”.
