Six UK returnees test positive for new strain of COVID-19

Six UK returnees have tested positive for the new strain of SARS-CoV2, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

Six UK returnees have tested positive for the new strain of SARS-CoV2, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday. The new variant was detected in the samples in NIMHANS, Bengaluru, in CCMB, Hyderabad and one in NIV, Pune, the ministry said.

The persons who have tested positive for the new strain have been isolated in single rooms at their designated health care facilities by the respective state governments, said the health ministry. Their close contacts too are under quarantine, it added.
”Comprehensive contact tracing has been initiated for co-travellers, family contacts, and others. Genome sequencing on other specimens is going on.
The ministry said that the situation is being watched carefully and regular advice is being issued to states for enhanced surveillance, containment, testing and dispatch of samples to INSACOG labs.
