Maharashtra government has released guidelines for containing the spread of COVID-19. All cinema halls, restaurants, hotels have been asked to operate at 50 percent capacity with restrictions and no social, political, religious, or cultural gatherings will be allowed.
Shashank Joshi, member, Maharashtra COVID Task Force spoke to CNBC-TV18.
He said, “The situation is pretty grim. We have clear orange to red signals in many geographies and clusters of the state. We have 90 percent plus recovery and a very low case-fatality rate so those are the positive signals. However, there are negative signals too such as 80 percent of people are asymptomatic so they have to be home isolated with strict quarantine guidelines and they are not staying at home and they are the ones who are spreading it across to the population at large.”
Joshi further added, “Our contact tracing is very poor. We need to increase our contact tracing to 1:30 so we need to get our public health strategy in order on a very aggressive platform. We definitely need citizen’s cooperation. Without their cooperation, we can do nothing. If authorities are in fatigue mode and people are in rebel mode it is going to be very tough to contain a pandemic like COVID.”
On the AstraZeneca vaccine, he said, “Without seeing any research data of the cause-effect relationship between the formation of clots and vaccinated individuals in a research journal to use these kneejerk strategies are not appropriate at all.”
On protocols, even after getting the vaccination, he said, “COVID appropriate behavior has to be followed in the whole of 2021. One should be fully cautious and careful and on the guard for at least two months. The practice of wearing masks will continue in 2021.”
