India's vaccination drive, which was kicked off with much fanfare, is not proceeding as the government might have hoped. It has taken 34 days to cross 1 crore inoculations.

Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are the front-runners in the vaccination drive, while West Bengal and Chhattisgarh have seen the slowest off-take.

To discuss this, CNBC-TV18 spoke to Anuradha Gupta, Deputy CEO at The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization or GAVI.

GAVI, a global public-private health partnership aims to provide better access of new and underused vaccines especially to children living in the world's poorest nations.

"We have been able secure more than 2 billion doses, it is a diverse portfolio of vaccines and we are in dialogue with more vaccine manufacturers for more vaccine products and also more doses," Gupta said.

On India's vaccination program, she said, "We are getting started I would say, and start always is slow, but so long as it is intentional, it is deliberate and it focused on gathering momentum at the right pace then I think the pole post is quite achievable. So we are happy that India has started to roll out its vaccination program and with the support of India now, within the next week doses should be going out to several other countries.”

She added, "We are very concerned that in order to put an end to acute phase of the pandemic what we would need is equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines to an extent that every country is able to vaccinate its most vulnerable high-risk populations."
