Delhi on Wednesday saw yet another record single-day jump in COVID-19 cases with over 6,800 confirmed infections as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said the city was witnessing the "third wave" of the virus amid rising pollution levels and festive season. This is the second consecutive day when the number of daily cases in the national capital has crossed the 6000-mark. The city has been witnessing a fresh surge in coronavirus cases over the last few days. The Delhi government has also started conducting targeted COVID-19 tests in markets and other crowded areas to strengthen its surveillance mechanism. On Wednesday, 51 new fatalities pushed the toll to 6,703. The 6,842 fresh cases were detected following the 58,910 tests conducted the previous day, and the positivity rate stood at 11.61 per cent.

Italy has registered 30,550 new coronavirus infections over the past 24 hours, the health ministry said on Wednesday, up from 28,244 on Tuesday. The ministry also reported 352 COVID-related deaths compared with 353 the day before. A total of 39,764 people have now died in Italy because of COVID-19, while 790,377 cases of the disease have been registered to date. The northern region of Lombardy, centred on Italy's financial capital Milan, remained the hardest hit area, reporting 7,758 new cases on Wednesday against 6,804 on Tuesday. The southern Campania region was the second-worst affected, chalking up 4,181 cases.

A COVID-19 patient gave birth to triplets, two boys and one girl, in Nizamabad in Telangana and they were discharged on Wednesday after successful treatment for 12 days. The woman conceived four years after marriage following medical treatment and she was presented with health complications on October 22, Dr Pratima of the government hospital said. The doctors and others from different departments in the hospital performed the deliverythrough C-section,she said. The mother tested negative for COVID-19 two days ago and also on Wednesday, she said. The babies, who had low birth weight, never tested positive for the infection, she said. Though the hospital is not a dedicated COVID-19 care centre, meticulous care was taken to ensure that the infection does not transmit from the mother to the babies, she added.

Late-stage trial results of a potential COVID-19 vaccine being developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca could be presented this year as the British government prepares for a possible vaccination rollout in late December or early 2021. A vaccine is seen as a game-changer in the battle against the coronavirus, which has killed more than 1.2 million people worldwide, shuttered swathes of the global economy and turned normal life upside down for billions of people. The tally of coronavirus infection in Rajasthan rose to 2.03 lakh on Wednesday recording 1,770 new cases in a day, while the death toll reached 1,945 with nine more people succumbing to the disease. According to the state health department's bulletin, the total number of people infected by COVID-19 stood at 2,03,990 out of which 16,323 were under treatment. As many as 1,85,722 people have been discharged after treatment till now. In Jaipur, the death toll from the coronavirus infection was 378, followed by 188 in Jodhpur, 144 in Ajmer, 142 in Bikaner, 116 in Kota, 95 in Bharatpur and 76 in Pali. Of the new cases, Jaipur reported 320, Jodhpur 185, Bikaner 179, Alwar 145, Ajmer 125, Sikar 98, Kota and Sriganganagar 72 each, Nagaur 65 and Pali 54.

Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday recorded 512 new positive cases of COVID-19, while nine deaths took place in the last 24 hours, taking the number of cases to 96,700 and the death toll to 1,511, officials said. Out of the fresh cases, 186 were from Jammu division and 326 from Kashmir valley, they said. The officials said Srinagar district recorded the highest of 135 cases, followed by 98 in Jammu. There are 5,935 active cases, while 89,254 patients have recovered so far, the officials said. Meanwhile, the Union Territory reported nine COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours with seven from Jammu division and two from the Kashmir valley, taking the death toll in the pandemic in Jammu and Kashmir to 1,511.

A decision on opening schools for classes 9 to 12 would be taken after seeking the opinion of parents on November 9, the Tamil Nadu government said here on Wednesday. The move to hold consultations comes days after Chief Minister K Palaniswami had said that schools would start functioning from November 16 for standards 9 to 12. There were however concerns in certain quartersover reopening schools in view of the pandemic, andmedia and newspapers reflected such opinions,an official release here said. Hence, school principals would hold consultation meetings on November 9 with parents and parent-teacher association office-bearers on re-starting classes for 9th to 12th standards, the statement said.

Coronavirus in Ladakh LIVE Updates: Ladakh has recorded 84 fresh cases of COVID-19, taking the virus caseload in the union territory to 6,441, according to an official bulletin. The union territory has recorded a total of 76 deaths, while 5,701 patients have been cured of the novel disease so far. Of the new cases, 71 people have tested positive for coronavirus in Leh district and 13 others in Kargil district, according to the bulletin released by Directorate of Health Services.

Coronavirus in Puducherry LIVE Updates: Puducherry reported 108 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the tally to 35,429. One more person, a 66-year-old man, died of the virus in the last 24 hours ending 10 am on Sunday, taking the toll to 597, the health department said. Three succumbed to the infection at a dedicated COVID hospital here on Tuesday and one at a military hospital in West Kameng, Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said.

The bulletin said that 3,981 fresh positive cases reported from across the state pushed the tally to 3,85,589. The number of active cases currently is 35,443, it said.
