Coronavirus India News live updates: India's COVID-19 death toll rose to 273 on Sunday, while the number of cases jumped to 8,356. The number of active COVID-19 cases stands at 7,367. Total cases increased by 909, with 802 active cases, 73 discharged and 34 deaths in the last 24 hours. Maharashtra's Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday extended the lockdown till April 30 in the view of rising spread of coronavirus in the state.     British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been discharged from hospital and will continue his recovery from COVID-19 at Chequers, his official country residence, his Downing Street office said in a statement on Sunday.

    Johnson, 55, was taken to St Thomas' Hospital in central London on April 5, suffering from persistent symptoms of the disease caused by the new coronavirus. On April 6 he was moved into intensive care, where he remained until April 9.

    "On the advice of his medical team, the PM will not be immediately returning to work. He wishes to thank everybody at St Thomas' for the brilliant care he has received," an official statement said.

    In his first comments since leaving intensive care, Johnson said he owed his life to hospital staff. "I can't thank them enough. I owe them my life," he said in comments that were released to journalists and confirmed by his office on Sunday.

    The Delhi government on Sunday identified Mahavir Enclave area in southwest Delhi as COVID-19 hotspot and ordered its sealing, taking the total number of such zones in the city to 34, an official said.

    He said an order has been issued and the Delhi government's 'Operation SHIELD' will come into force. "An order has been issued to seal street number 5 and 5A, H-2 Block, Bengali Colony in Mahavir Enclave," the official said. On Saturday, areas in Rajouri, Jahangirpuri and Deoli Extension were identified as hotspots.

    "I had a meeting with road sector officials. Work can be re-started at projects with condition that adequate measures are taken for safeguard against coronavirus. We have to follow guidelines. At some places collectors have given permission, some not. We are doing a follow up along with the chief secretaries of the states," the minister said.

    Ten Jewish worshippers wearing face masks prayed at the Western Wall on Sunday at a special "Priestly Blessing" during the holiday of Passover, an event usually attended by thousands.

    Because of coronavirus restrictions banning large public gatherings the group maintained social distancing at the holy site in Jerusalem's walled Old City.

    The blessing is carried out by members of the Jewish priestly caste, known as "Kohanim" in Hebrew. Holding prayer shawls above their heads and covering their faces, they chanted the blessing, starting with: "The Lord blesses you and keeps you".

    Kohanim are thought to be descended from the line of the biblical Aaron and are often referred to as Jewish priests because of their prominent role in worship in Judaism's ancient Temples in Jerusalem. The ceremony is held during the Jewish holidays of Passover and Sukkot.

    The coronavirus cases tally increased to 417 in Andhra Pradesh on Sunday. Overnight, 12 new cases were added to the list. The State Command Control Centre has not issued the daily bulltein, nor was the COVID-19 dashboard updated.

The South Asian region, comprising eight countries, is likely to show economic growth of 1.8 percent to 2.8 percent this year, the World Bank said in its South Asia Economic Focus report, well down from the 6.3 percent it projected six months ago.

    India's economy, the region's biggest, is expected to grow 1.5 percent to 2.8 percent in the fiscal year that started on April 1. The World Bank has estimated it will grow 4.8 percent to 5 percent in the fiscal year that ended on March 31.

    The incident took place at a vegetable market in Punjab's Patiala district. 

    Harjeet Singh's hand was chopped off and he was immediately rushed to the PGI Chandigarh for a surgery. 

    Director-General of Police Dinkar Gupta has deputed top plastic surgeons for the police officer's surgery. The DGP said that the Nihang group will be arrested soon.

  • Seven people who came in contact with Tablighi Jamaat members test positive in Korba district


    Seven individuals who came in contact with 16 Tablighi Jamaat members staying at a mosque in Katghora town of Chhattisgarh, have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, taking the number of COVID-19 cases in the state to 25, an official said on Sunday.

    The latest cases are from the Purani Basti locality of Katghora town in Korba district, the official said.

    The West Bengal government has decided to shut and sanitise its secretariat Nabanna on Sunday and Monday in view of the novel coronavirus, according to chief minister Mamata Banerjee.

    The secretariat is located on the bank of river Hooghly in Howrah district where a number of positive cases have been reported.

    "We will sanitise Nabanna. It has not been sanitised for some time. So, it will remain closed on Sunday and Monday," Mamata told the media in Kolkata on Saturday.
