Maharashtra: Over 12 lakh construction workers to get Rs 2,000 each

The Maharashtra government on Saturday decided to pay Rs 2,000 each to over 12 lakh registered construction workers in the state who have lost their livelihoods due to the ongoing coronavirus lockdown. The curbs, which were imposed on March 24, were later extended till May 3.

1,200 bottles of illicit liquor seized from truck in Haryana during lockdown

The Haryana Police seized 1,200 bottles of illicit liquor in Kaithal district on Saturday when the consignment was being smuggled in a truck during the ongoing lockdown to combat the coronavirus outbreak. Police also arrested the driver and the helper of the truck and seized the bottles which were packed in 100 cartons. The arrested accused were identified as Sunil Kumar (driver) and Rajbir alias Pola, a spokesperson of the police department said here. He said that a police team on lockdown duty was present at a check barrier on Dhand road in the district.

Odisha launches large-scale corona sample test campaign in Bhubaneswar

The Odisha government on Saturday launched a large-scale coronavirus sample test campaign in the state capital here with help of 25 designated teams formed by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), officials said. Around 5,000 samples would be tested from Bhubaneswar alone as the state capital has emerged as one of the hotspots of COVID-19, chief secretary A K Tripathy said on Friday. Of the total 60 COVID-19 positive cases detected so far in Odisha, 46 patients hailed from Bhubaneswar making it a hotspot in the state.

Iran virus deaths top 5,000: Ministry​

Iran on Saturday announced 73 new deaths from the coronavirus, raising the official toll to 5,031 as the government allowed small businesses to reopen in Tehran as they already have in the provinces. It was the seventh day that the number of deaths in the previous 24 hours had fallen. It was also the fifth straight day that the number of new deaths had stayed in double figures, ministry spokesman Kianoush Jahanpour told a news conference.

Spain reports more than 20,000 coronavirus deaths

The death toll from the coronavirus in Spain, one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic, moved past 20,000 on Saturday, the health ministry said. A total of 20,043 people have now succumbed to the disease, which killed 565 people in Spain in the past 24 hours, slightly down on the 585 reported on Friday.

Air India opens bookings on select domestic routes from May 4, international from June 1

Air India on Saturday announced it has opened bookings on select domestic and international routes from May 4 and June 1, respectively. "In the light of the ongoing global health concerns, we have currently stopped accepting bookings on all domestic flights for travel till May 3, 2020, and on all international flights for travel till May 31, 2020," a notification on Air India's website said on Saturday. "Bookings for select domestic flights for travel from May 4, 2020, and for international flights for travel from June 1, 2020 onwards are open," it stated.

Bharuch civil hospital shut as 6 staff test coronavirus positive

Six employees, including a doctor, of Bharuch civil hospital in Gujarat have tested positive for coronavirus, prompting authorities to close the facility temporarily and quarantine its staff members. Even Out-Patient Department (OPD) will not remain functional for some time, an official said on Saturday. The OPD will be handled by a nearby trust-run hospital for time being. "A gynaecologist, two women medical officers and three laboratory technicians working at the government hospital here on Friday tested positive for coronavirus," said Bharuch Collector MD Modia.

Centre gave funds, foodgrain to Punjab to combat COVID-19: Harsimrat Badal

26 Navy personnel in Western Naval Command test positive for coronavirus

At least 26 Indian Navy personnel have tested positive for coronavirus at the strategically-located Western Naval Command in Mumbai, in the first case of a major outbreak of the deadly infection in the armed forces. All the infected sailors were serving at the INS Angre, a shore-based logistics and support establishment, and they are currently undergoing treatment at a Navy hospital, official sources said. The number of infected sailors is 26, military sources confirmed. However, in a statement in the morning, the Navy has put the number of infected sailors at 21. The difference in the number could not be reconciled immediately.
