From successfully developing the model for coal mine auctions to education mafia, Anil Swarup, one of the most respected bureaucrats in recent times, spoke to CNBC-TV18, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Ayushman Bharat-National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM) is the need of the hour and has come at the right time.
Speaking exclusively to CNBC-TV18's Shereen Bhan, secretary, school education and literacy, said, if Ayushman Bharat scheme gets implemented sooner, the better it's as the people need it at a scale, which it's being launched.
A 1981 batch IAS officer, Swarup said Ayushman Bharat insurance cover is Rs 5,00,000 compared to Rs 30,000 of Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY).
“The coverage of Ayushman Bharat is also huge. Certainly, the biggest health insurance scheme in the world and I hope it does well. I am very hopeful given the team that has been brought in and the CEO is an extremely accomplished person," Swarup added.
Once implemented, NHPM will be the country's largest health insurance programme in terms of the size of insurance as well as number of people covered.
Talking on RSBY, he said the project was a classic example of public-private partnership for delivering social security scheme.
Swarup, who is retiring this month said, poor people were deprived a lot and one single health event pushed many people into deep poverty and it was in that context, I felt that scheme did make a lot of effort to bring bout some changes in their lives, give them some assurance in terms of health.
RSBY was an amazing experience, on count of the fact that, we were trying to address issues relating to health of poorest of the poor in the country, he added.
However, RSBY was very challenging assignment and I enjoyed every moment of it, Swarup said.
