Petrol and diesel prices rose 15 paise and about 17 paise, respectively on Thursday after remaining stable for a day on Wednesday across the four metro cities — Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi and Kolkata. 


Petrol prices have risen about 76 paise while diesel prices have increased by 71 paise over the past one week.

Petrol price in Mumbai stood at Rs 76.79 a litre, while diesel was at Rs 69.47 per litre on Thursday.  

According to the Indian Oil Corp data, in New Delhi, petrol costs Rs 71.15 per litre and diesel costs Rs 66.33 per litre.

In Kolkata and Chennai, petrol stood at Rs 73.25 per litre and Rs 73.87 per litre while diesel stood at Rs 68.12 per litre and Rs 70.09 a litre, respectively.

US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil futures were at $57.33 per barrel at 0256 GMT, 17 cents, or 0.3 percent, above their last settlement, but below their 2019 high of $57.55 reached the previous day.

International Brent crude futures were at $67.14 per barrel, 6 cents above their last close and not far off their 2019 peak, hit the day before, of $67.38 per barrel.

As per the country's dynamic pricing mechanism, the domestic fuel prices depend upon international fuel prices on a 15-day average and the value of the rupee.

India's fuel demand rose 6.4 percent in January compared with the same month last year. Consumption of fuel, a proxy for oil demand, totalled 18.34 million tonnes, data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the oil ministry showed.
