In a major relief for consumers, the government on Thursday reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 1.50 per litre and said the oil marketing companies (OMC) will absorb the impact to the tune of Re 1 per litre.
The consumers will get a benefit of  Rs. 2.50, said finance minister Arun Jaitley while announcing the decision.
He also appealed to the states to reduce the fuel prices.
So far, eleven BJP-ruled states reduced fuel prices by Rs 2.50 per litre. All BJP rules states are expected to cut fuel price, according to reports.  The reduction in the fuel prices by these government will give the people a total benefit of Rs 5 per litre.
Maharashtra:
Reacting to the centre's move, the Maharashtra government has cut Rs 2.5 per litre on petrol. The petrol will now be cheaper by Rs 5 in the state.
Gujarat
Following the suit, the Gujarat government has reduced the price of petrol and diesel by Rs 2.50.
Assam
The Northeastern state cut the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs  2.50 per litre after the centre's plea.
Tripura
Another Northeastern state that slashed the fuel prices by Rs 2.50.
Uttar Pradesh
The BJP-ruled state also reduced the petrol and diesel price by Rs 2.50.
Jharkhand
The state reduced the diesel price by Rs 2.50, but not of petrol.
Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh joined other states by reducing the fuel prices by Rs 2.50.
Arunachal Pradesh
This Northeastern state also slashed the price by Rs 2.50 per litre.
Uttarakhand
The BJP-ruled state also reduced the petrol and diesel price by Rs 2.50.
Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh joined other states by reducing the fuel prices by Rs 2.50.
