In a surprising move, country's most populated state, Uttar Pradesh, introduced a cow welfare cess on Wednesday on eight profit-making public sector infrastructure companies to fund the construction and maintenance of cow shelters.
The cow cess will allow the government to charge 0.5 percent additional levy on excise items. The new cess will reportedly be levied on toll tax and profits made by public sector enterprises and construction agencies and is likely to lead to rise in price of alcohol in the state.
According to reports, no such estimate has been made by the on how much money the government is expecting to collect. However, the government aims to tackle the problem of stray cattle across the Uttar Pradesh villages by leaving cess.
While India is new to bizarre taxes, countries like Sweden, Switzerland, among others, also have their own set of strange taxes.
