On January 8, 1942, exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo, Stephen William Hawking was born in Oxford, England. A ‘rare genius’ Hawking made discoveries in the field of cosmology that proved that black holes could leak energy and particles into space. Hawking, however suffered from a rare motor neuron disease which forbid him to move, restricting him to his personalised wheelchair and would eventually lose his speech.
