PNB fraud: Mehul Choksi fears threat to life due to mob lynching trend, says report

Mehul Choksi, one of the prime accused in the Punjab National Bank fraud case, said he could not travel to India because there is a threat to his life, The Indian Express reported on Thursday.

Gitanjali Gems promoter Choksi said he fears for his life following "the recent trend of mob lynching" in India, according to the report.

Choksi approached the special CBI court in Mumbai on Wednesday to seek the cancellation of the two non-bailable warrants issued against him in April and May, the report said.

Choksi said he would not be able to disclose his current location and added that five groups, including some of his existing employees whose salaries are due, have shown "grievance and anger" against him.

Diamantaire Nirav Modi, his uncle and jeweller Mehul Choksi and others are being probed by various agencies after the bank fraud came to light in February following a complaint from Punjab National Bank that they allegedly cheated the nationalised bank to the tune of over Rs 13,000 crore.
