The government has found 60 percent of the money deposited, right after demonetisation, in 3.7 crore Jan Dhan accounts to be 'suspicious', Business Standard reported.
The document, which was reviewed by the paper, pointed out that the total amount of cash deposited was more than Rs 42,200 crore in the 3.7 crore Jan Dhan accounts.
The amount had stood at more than Rs70,000 crore in January 2017, implying that 60 percent of the money deposited was taken to be as suspicious transactions.
Hasmukh Adhia, finance secretary, confirmed with the paper that the investigations are going on after the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) received 30 one-time reports from 187 companies. "Prima facie, these deposits cannot be said to be illicit. The information has been received by the CBDT for necessary investigations and consequential actions," he said.
