Soon, linking of voter ID with Aadhaar number will be made mandatory, according to a report by The Economic Times.
The Election Commission of India is preparing to make a pitch for the mandatory linking of voter ID with Aadhaar, people close to the development told ET, adding that the commission is all set to propose amendments to the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The commission will soon be sending its suggestion to the law ministry, said the report. The move it aimed at improving the accuracy of electoral rolls, it added.
The development comes following the Supreme Court’s verdict in September that restricts Aadhaar linkage to certain services. The report said that the verdict had prompted the commission to seek advice from the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) regarding its effect on commission’s plans to resume the linking process.
The step also marks a clear shift in the policy of the commission that till 2015 had embarked on voluntary Aadhaar linking, it added.
