Updated : April 29, 2019 04:41 PM IST

Making a plea for conservation, researchers have detailed in a study how the endangered Ganges river dolphin is heading towards “local extinction” in the Barak river system of Assam.
Researchers have drawn attention to the extirpation of the Ganges river dolphins first from the tributaries and subsequently from the Barak river main channel suggesting a decline in the upstream distribution range by around 135 km.
Poaching, ending up in fishery by-catch, construction of flood-control infrastructure, presence of motorboats, dredging, siltation are some of the major factors for the decline of the dolphin in the Barak river system.
