The 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a domestic T20 cricket league, is all set to start today in the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The first match will be played between last year’s defending champions Chennai Super Kings, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Indian skipper Virat Kohli led Royal Challengers Bangalore.
The cricket league, governed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has made quite a name for itself, attracting some of the biggest names on the cricket field, since its inception in 2008.
A total of eight teams will play in this edition: Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
The IPL matches follow the round-robin format where each team plays two matches with every other team, one match at home and the other away. However, it is highly doubtful if the format will be followed to the T as the country is going to polls for the 17th Lok Sabha elections.
Earlier, during election years in 2009 and 2014, the matches were played in South Africa and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
