The government has missed its ambitious target of providing electricity to every home in India, with at least 10.48 lakh households in four states still lacking power.
The households in Assam, Rajasthan, Meghalaya and Chhattisgarh are yet to be electrified, a government statement said on Monday, the year-end deadline for achieving the target.
The government launched the Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana, or  Saubhagya scheme, in September 2017 to achieve the goal of universal household electrification in the country. The scheme aims to provide last-mile connectivity and electricity connections to all remaining households in rural as well as urban areas.
The government intends to showcase universal electrification as one of its big achievements in the coming general elections.
All states and Union Territories were required to complete work for household electrification by December 31, 2018. Monday’s government statement says the deadline has been extended to March 31, 2019.
The government has so far connected about 2.39 crore households in 25 states since launch of the scheme, according to the statement.
But it remains to be seen how many of these states have been truly electrified.  Monday’s statement says that the Uttar Pradesh government has launched a special campaign in all parts of the state to identify any left out un-electrified households and to provide electricity connections to such households.
Bloomberg was the first to report about the government missing the deadline.
The states that are yet to provide power are taking all concerted efforts to achieve, at the earliest, household electrification, the government statement said.
