India currently has more #MeToo Google searches than any other county, according to Google Trends' interactive map.
On Thursday, all of the top five cities searching for #MeToo are in India leaving the country glowing brighter than any other. The cities are Cuttack, Bhanwreli, Sambalpur, Ujjain and Dewas.
This movement reached India after actress Tanushree Dutta repeated an allegation from a decade earlier, of sexual harassment on the sets of a 2008 film called ‘Horn Ok Pleassss’. She accused co-stars Nana Patekar and choreographer Ganesh Archarya of creating an environment that allowed her to be sexually harassed.
Several known Indian names have been alleged for sexually harassing and/or assaulting women, such as famous actor Alok Nath, veteran journalist MJ Akbar, comedian Utsav Chakraborty, director Vikram Bahl, among others.
Google Trends data was used to create a visualization of Google Search interest in “MeToo” over time. This data represents global trends of people searching for the movement from the top 300 searching cities every day.
According to Google Trends, the search has been used in every country on Earth but nowhere as much as India which has a population of 1.3 billion.
The map has tracked search and social media trends since October 2017 until today.
