The Central Bureau of Investigation has requested the Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice against diamantaire Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi.
A Red Corner Notice is the closest instrument currently available to an international arrest warrant, and is used to locate individuals with the goal of extradition, according to the US Department of Justice.
The development comes after reports that Modi has fled to the United Kingdom and is claiming political asylum from what he calls a "political persecution."
More than 25 people including Modi, Choksi, former PNB chief Usha Ananthasubramanian, two of the bank’s executive directors and three companies belonging to Nirav Modi have had charges filed against them in the Rs 13,000 crore Punjab National Bank scam.
The central government is also pushing for the extradition from London of the liquor baron Vijay Mallya, who has been accused of charges including fraud to the tune of Rs 9,000 crore, a charge that he denies.
