Midnight's Children | Author: Salman Rushdie Winner of the “Best of the Booker” award, Midnight’s Children is an institution in fiction writing. With the lockdown resulting in lowered spirits, a doze of magical realism – a genre synonymous with Rushdie – might help you leave behind your worries and travel back in history to see India emerge out of British colonial rule, alebit with a doze of magic. The book also has a controversial section with scathing criticism of Indira Gandhi's over-reach during the Emergency. (Recommended by - Abhishek Jha)

Pride and Prejudice | Author: Jane Austen The 1813 classic remains an absolute joy to read regardless of age and time and will make you fall in love with - Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy - the two main protagonists. More importantly, during lockdown and social restrictions, the Jane Austen book is available online easily with several adaptations in movies and tv series. The closest that comes to is the 2005 film Pride & Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen. For Indians, there is a desi version, Bride and Prejudice, starring Aishwarya Rai. Mafia Queens of Mumbai | Author: Hussain Zaidi For those who, unlike most, prefer non-fiction over fiction and crime over other genres, investigative journalist Hussain Zaidi's Mafia Queens of Mumbai is too good a narration to be given a miss. Of all the crime books that you have read, this thirteen-story book on women who were a part of the underworld – from prostitution ringleaders to trained assassins – giving tiniest and juicy details while maintaining the suspense intact, would perhaps take the least sessions to finish and bring to you a side of the dark side that has never been told about before. Zaidi, who brings these details in the book from his own investigations, uncovers how the women in a man’s world rose to the top spots. (Recommended by – Niral Sharma)

Gone With The Wind | Author: Margaret Mitchell A rather long read, the classic is set amid the backdrop of the 19th-century American Civil War and the subsequent restoration. The book not only narrates the gripping love story of its lead characters and how events affect them, it also underlines how some events permanently change society -- even nations -- and that most people are oblivious to such changes, till after.
