Back in the day, the new year truly began with the unfurling of a crisp new calendar at home. The blocks of numbers, days where we could see the spaces ready to be filled with hope and optimism. The kitchen or dining space usually has its own calendar. A handy space to mark out the days the help didn’t turn up, the milkman got paid, or the paperboy missed the weekend supplement.
The margins of the kitchen calendar held grocery lists, school holidays were marked with a star and the dates you won a prize at school, would see a smiley face.
