The Trailblazers. The Unstoppables. These are the people who make things happen instead of waiting for things to happen. They change the game because the game favours the bold! These are the people who are fuelled by passion and seize every opportunity they get.
Garima Avtar is one such trailblazer. The corporate vice-president at Delton Cables Limited has risen to become one of the top rally-racing drivers in India. Married at the tender age of 18, she later separated from her partner. Being a single mother, with no work experience or a professional degree, didn’t stop her from following her passion for driving, something her father inculcated in her.
A single mother, she struck a careful balance between nurturing her daughter and pursuing her ambitions, staying true to the values inculcated by her father and the passions that were rooted in exploration of the limits of self and adventure.
In 2011, she participated in a race-rally which left her feeling invigorated. It was then she decided to take it up as a profession. However, taking up a ‘risky’ profession like this meant letting go of any comfort she held. But she heeded her late father’s words to trust her instincts and officially became a rally racing driver.
Within two years, she got her first big-break when Mahindra gave her an opportunity to pursue her passion and carve a niche for herself on the rally circuit. Today, she is one of the few female rally drivers to have participated in nearly all of India’s major rallying competitions, including the Indian National Rally Championship, the Raid De Himalayas, Desert Storm, the Mughal Rally, the Monsoon Challenge and many autocrosses and speed sprints.
Garima Avtar is recently being featured in Courtyard by Marriott’s new advertising campaign in India -- revolving around a film that combines a day on the track and a day at the hotel, in a stylishly told story about how Courtyard supports her while she pursues her passion for rally racing. Garima was selected for her trailblazing spirit, reflecting the shifting perceptions of success of Courtyard’s “next generation of guests” (it’s no longer about climbing the career ladder, but increasingly more about following one’s passions, and collecting experiences). The campaign is an articulation of Courtyard’s shared belief system with its guests – the passion that drives you as a person, is the passion which drives Courtyard as a brand.
