Marvel's 'Avengers: Endgame' sets multiple records at box office

The "Avengers" finale, Endgame, far exceeded even its own expectations, according to studio estimates done on Sunday. The movie had been forecast to open between $260 million and $300 million in the US and Canadian theaters, but moviegoers turned out in such droves that "Endgame" blew past the previous record of $257.7 million, set last year by "Avengers: Infinity War" when it narrowly surpassed "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($248 million or about $266 million in inflation-adjusted dollars.) In India, Avengers: Endgame has sold over 25 lakh tickets in advance bookings, setting the record of highest ever advance ticket sales for a Hollywood movie on BookMyShow. According to Box Office Mojo, a website that tracks box office revenue, Avengers: Endgame made its debut in Australia with a $7 million collection, the Philippines with $3.9 million, Hong Kong with $2.7 million, Taiwan with $2.6 million, Thailand with $2.4 million, and Malaysia with $2 million. The numbers are all single-day records, the report found.

Single-handedly, "Endgame" led the overall weekend at the domestic box office to a record $400 million in ticket sales, according to Comscore. "Endgame" accounted for a staggering 88 percent of those tickets. The film's grosses were aided by 3-D screenings (a record $540 million in global ticket sales) and IMAX screenings (a company record of $91.5 million). (AP)
