The tussle over the use of Ayush trademark has pitted the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy against Hindustan Unilever Ltd. (HUL), reported The Economic Times.

According to the report, the ministry has asked the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks not to register the acronym as a trademark.
“Hindustan Unilever has applied for registration of trademark Ayush which, if granted, may lead to confusion among general public…The ministry has written to the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks to look into the matter for non-consideration of such a request,” the ministry spokesperson was quoted as saying in the report.
The company had reportedly bought the trademark from Jayalakshmi Oil & Chemical Industries in 2001 after the latter registered it in 1987. An HUL spokesperson told The Economic Times that the matter is in court and the company is taking all necessary steps to preserve its rights over Lever Ayush
