In a mail written to employees on the 14th anniversary of the airline, Chairman and Managing Director Ajay Singh said that the airline has been adding one aircraft every week since past three weeks and the 100th aircraft will be added in less than a week's time.
"Nowhere in the world has an airline expanded at this pace, increased capacity and added new stations and flights as SpiceJet has done in the last one month," Singh said.
The airline's fleet was reduced in March when 13 of its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft got grounded due to safety concerns about the aircraft type after two fatal crashes involving a MAX plane.
After the Jet Airways crisis, a lot of Jet's Boeing 737 aircraft were de-registered from March onwards by the civil aviation regulator on request from the lessors due to non-payment of lease rentals by the airline.
SpiceJet, being a Boeing operator, made the most of the situation and got a substantial number of these aircraft on lease. Currently, it has 93 aircraft.
"As we sprint on our growth path, SpiceJet is eyeing an aggressive expansion plan across both its domestic and international network. We aim to build SpiceJet into a reputed international carrier operating medium to long-haul flights and the rigorous groundwork for it has already begun," Singh added.
At the same time, IndiGo, the market leader, has been adding one plane every week since last year. From 208 planes as on December 31, its website shows that as of today, it has a fleet of 228 aircraft. This means that it has maintained the speed of one aircraft every week for this year as well.
