IndiGo increases salaries of employees after three years
It is appraisal season for pilots of market leader IndiGo after a gap of three years. The airline has increased salaries of all flight crew, cabin crew and “eligible non-crew” with effect from April 1, 2019.

“As you probably know, this past year has been a challenging year for the company. Our profitability in the first few quarters was significantly impacted because of escalating oil prices and a weaker rupee. We, however, went through a high growth spurt inducting new aircraft and opening newer international and domestic stations,” the appraisal mail to employees read.

“Through all this expansion pressure and profit pressure, our employees stretched themselves to a high level of performance. In recognition of this contribution to the company, I am pleased to announce salary increments for both our crew and non-crew employees effective Apr 1, 2019,” the mail added.

The good news for IndiGo pilots comes at a time when the airline has been struggling to maintain its commander strength in line with capacity induction. The airline had to operate a curtailed flight schedule for nearly two months due to the shortage of senior pilots. Pilots across industry and especially at IndiGo have often complained of long and strenuous duty hours, leaving them exhausted.

This move from 6E also comes at a time when the industry has been going through a whirlwind with the suspension of operations at Jet Airways and unprecedented rate of expansion at SpiceJet.

While all cockpit and cabin crew who are line released or line ready will receive an upwards revision in their pay via individualised salary letters, in the case of non-crew employees,  all eligible employees will receive a merit increase based on their performance and market benchmarks, IndiGo said in a communication to employees.
