“We received an application from AirAsia India last week and the airline primarily wants to fly to south-east Asian nations, to start with,” the sources told the paper.
According to the sources, the airline's application will be considered by a group of ministers led by the finance minister.
The panel of ministers was set up according to the Prime Minister’s Office after the Central Bureau of Investigation started investigating the relaxation of eligibility norms for flying overseas. The norm to operate for five years in the domestic sector and have a 20-aircraft fleet had been relaxed in 2016. Only the fleet size norm was retained.
Vistara, which is another joint venture of Tata, is still waiting for its approval to fly overseas.
