Tesla in talks with 5 state governments to begin India operations

Tesla is in touch with five state governments in India and is now exploring the possibility of setting up manufacturing, R&D centres in the country, CNBC-TV 18 has learnt.

The news comes days after Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that they are looking to begin operations in India in 2021.

The news comes days after Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that they are looking to begin operations in India in 2021.

The report added that Tesla is actively consulting Centre and state governments and is in the process of carrying out a location search for setting up operations. The electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing giant has hired a global consulting firm for the same.

State governments in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have held talks with Tesla, with the company also considering local partnership for sourcing.

Reports have revealed that the Karnataka government has given multiple options to the Palo Alto-based EV and clean energy company, including different location options for setting up manufacturing, R&D and a head office.

“Government of Karnataka is seriously interested in inviting Tesla. We have given them location options for different segments. Tumkur is one of the locations that has been offered,” said an official who didn’t wish to be named.

Along with Elon Musk, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari too has said that Tesla will begin with sales operations in India.

As per earlier reports, the automaker had commenced pre-bookings in India back in 2016 with an aim to launch Tesla cars on Indian roads in 2017, but the plan was shelved due to the import policies and infrastructure issues.

Elon Musk’s company is all set to enter India with the Model 3 Sedan, which is expected to cost around Rs 60 lakh. The fully electric vehicle is powered by a 60kw hour lithium-ion battery pack with a range of 500 km. The sedan has a top speed of around 250 km and goes from 0 to 60mph in only 3.1 seconds.
