Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) on Tuesday launched a new version of its entry-level hatchback Alto 800, which has been the country's best selling model for 15 consecutive years, priced between Rs 2.93 lakh and Rs 3.71 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
The new model now comes with BS-VI emission norms compliant petrol engine, additional safety features and new design. Therefore, the price of the model has gone up by at least Rs 30,000 in Delhi as compared with the outgoing version.
When it comes to appearance, it features a new grille and sharp headlamps. The car gets dual tone finish with new air-con ducts and a stylish speedometer. While air-conditioning, power steering and front power windows are only available from the LXI variant onwards, the top VXI variant also gets central locking, keyless entry and a music system with Bluetooth connectivity.
Moreover, the new Alto gets the Smart Play Dock with Bluetooth connectivity. This Smart Play Dock transforms the phone into a touch interface to access calls, music, navigation and more. The keyless entry is also part of the update. There are six colour options to choose from - Uptown Red, Superior White, Silky Silver, Granite Grey, Mojito Green and Cerulean Blue.
In terms of safety, the car comes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), which will help to avoid skidding by electronically controlling braking pressure and Electronic Brake Force Distribution System (EBD).
Other standard safety features in the car include Reverse Parking Sensor, Driver Airbag, speed alert System and Seat Belt Reminder for both driver and co-driver. New Alto also complies with the upcoming crash and pedestrian safety regulation.
Under the hood is the same 796 cc petrol engine producing 48bhp and 69Nm. However, this engine is BS-VI compliant owing to the upgraded hardware and software along with a reworked exhaust system. The fuel efficiency of the new Alto is 22.05kmpl.
"With cumulative sales of over 3.7 million since its launch in 2000, Alto has been a symbol of pride for Indian car users. Nearly 58 percent of Alto customers have chosen it as their first car purchase," MSI senior executive director (marketing & sales) RS Kalsi said.
