Rajya Sabha passed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019 on Wednesday after a 7-hour debate. The bill got 125 votes in favour while 105 voted against it.
Earlier in the day, Union home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday introduced the bill in the Rajya Sabha and a fierce debate ensued between the government and the opposition benches.
The CAB, which seeks to provide Indian nationality to Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists fleeing persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, has garnered protests from the opposition with the Congress calling it "unconstitutional".
The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
