Modi Cabinet meeting highlights: Govt extends income support scheme for all farmers, launches pension scheme for traders and farmers

The first day of the second edition of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance government turned out to be quite eventful with the new administration announcing a slew of pro-farmer and pension benefits for traders and self-employed people in order to boost rural demand. As promised in BJP manifesto, the Modi government extended the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana to all farmers which hitherto provided Rs 6000 per annum income support to small and marginalised farmers. Earlier, President Ram Nath Kovind allocated portfolios among newly sworn in Council of Ministers with Amit Shah getting home ministry and Nirmala Sitharman getting finance ministry along with corporate affairs. Rajnath Singh has been moved to the defence ministry, while former foreign secretary S Jaishankar has been allotted external affairs ministry.
